Golfing in Gilroy: Something for Everyone

From undulating greens to wide open fairways, Gilroy’s picturesque golf courses promise memorable rounds for both beginners and experienced players.

Golfers have three courses to choose from in the Garlic Capital of the World, including the 18-hole Eagle Ridge Golf Club, Gilroy Golf Course offering 11 holes of play, and the 9-hole executive golf course at Gavilan College Golf Course.

A Top-Tier Challenge: Eagle Ridge

For more skilled players, Eagle Ridge Golf Club offers a par-72 course featuring multi-tiered greens, rolling fairways, and vistas of oak-studded foothills.  “We have all the mountains and the hilly terrain that makes it more challenging,” said Golf Pro Jack McPhillips.

Eagle Ridge Golf Club boasts a full driving range, putting greens, and chipping area, plus three instructors for lessons. Golfers newer to the course may notice recent changes including refurbished bunkers, newly aerated greens, and fewer sand traps for a more player-friendly experience.

Golfers may choose from afternoon special rates, a spring league that plays monthly on Saturday afternoons, a weekly Thursday league, as well as senior citizen rates from Monday through Thursday. The clubhouse offers a full-service restaurant and bar.

11 Holes of History: Gilroy Golf Course

Another enjoyable round of golf can be found at Gilroy Golf Course, a historic course in the serene Uvas Valley. This 11-hole one-of-a-kind gem was built in 1923 and offers special amenities, including club fitting, club repair, and club building. Golf Pro John Torres says the course also carries top name brand clubs and special financing options.

On the course, golfers will experience small greens and generous, tree-lined fairways, perfect for the recreational golfer yet difficult enough for the low handicapper. Golfers looking to polish their game can try out the indoor simulator or the driving range.

The Gilroy Golf Course hosts numerous tournaments throughout the year, including the Gilroy Garlic Festival Tournament in June and the “Garlic Golf Classic,” and also offers lessons and youth golf camps.

“We try to keep it a family environment and inclusive to everyone,” Torres said.

Breakfast, lunch, and early dinner are served up at the course’s restaurant, O-Town BBQ & Grill. The course is open seven days a week.

A Great Place to Get Started: Gavilan College Golf Course

Beginners and recreational golfers alike will enjoy a round at Gavilan College Golf Course, a nine-hole executive golf course, also located on the west side of Gilroy.

“I think what makes Gavilan College Golf Course unique is the accessibility of the level of play,” said Golf Pro Don DeLorenzo.

Open seven days a week from dawn to dusk, the course offers a flat, walkable par-31 course that doesn’t necessitate renting a cart. Built in the late 1960s, the relaxed course is surrounded by oak trees and grazing cattle. There’s also a driving range with synthetic mats and real grass, a chipping area for practicing your short game, and a putting green.

The course also offers appealing rates, with discounts on weekdays. Golfers can choose to play nine holes or play a full 18. Refreshments and take-and-go snacks are available. Before heading out to the greens in Gilroy, make sure to check with the golf courses directly for their hours of operation and rates.
