Viticulture in the Gilroy and wider Santa Clara County region traces back over 250 years, making it the oldest wine-making region in California. Known by natives as the “Valley of the Heart’s Delight,” the area had more than 100 wineries by the 1880s, producing more than 5 million gallons of wine annually. The 1900s brought setbacks from phylloxera, Prohibition and economic decline, but the region rebounded in the mid-20th century and earned its official AVA status in 1989. Exploring the wineries of our region means learning the history that has shaped our corner of California.
