Before You Hit The Trail
Tips & Safety Essentials
- Weather and Season: Temperatures can hit 90°F+ (occasionally triple digits) in summer - start early and avoid midday. Conditions vary widely by park: Mt. Madonna runs cooler, Pinnacles is best fall through spring. Many trails have limited shade.
- Trail Conditions: Review current trail conditions before heading out. Seasonal closures, maintenance, and weather can affect trail access. Check park websites, or call ahead to get direct tips from Ranger.
- Attire: Wear comfortable clothing, sturdy footwear, and sun protection appropriate for the season and terrain.
- Pack Water & Snacks: Bring plenty of drinking water and energizing snacks, especially during warmer months and longer outings.
- Bring (or download) a Map: Cell service can be limited in some areas, especially Henry W. Coe, Mt. Madonna, and Uvas Canyon. Download trail maps before you go - Avenza Maps (free) and AllTrails (free to browse; offline maps require a paid plan) are both good resources.
- Know the Pet Rules: Pet policies vary by park and trail; Check regulations before you go, keep pets leashed where permitted, and bring supplies for care and cleanup.
- Stay on Designated Trails: Follow posted signs, trail markers, and park guidelines to help protect natural habitats and ensure a safe experience.
- Leave No Trace: Help keep our outdoor spaces beautiful by packing out everything you bring in and leaving nature as you found it.
