When you think of Gilroy, your mind might go straight to garlic and sunshine, but beneath the surface of this flavorful city is a creative heartbeat that’s redefining local culture. Art has a way of elevating a community, and in Gilroy, that spirit shows up everywhere you look.
The city has become a cultural melting pot where every mural, gallery, and festival tells a story of heritage, collaboration, inclusivity and imagination. The Mural Trail: In Downtown and beyond
One of the most accessible and compelling ways to experience Gilroy is via street art. The Gilroy Mural Trail is a self-guided walking route that leads you through some of the city’s most striking murals. You’ll find public murals that reflect community narratives, cultural pride, and creative voices, from restored Chicano works to youth-driven pieces like Art Is My Voice conceived through mentorship through 6th Street Studios & Art Center.
A mural tour offers a perfect way for visitors to experience Gilroy’s story firsthand. These murals function as open-air galleries, making public art part of the city’s evolving identity.

Amid the murals are several local stops in historic downtown Gilroy, and venturing indoors reveals the full depth of our creative community.
At The Neon Exchange, Toni Bowles steers the Be Seen Gallery, a rotating exhibition space spotlighting local and regional artists. The Neon Exchange is a combination of event center and meeting space housed in a beautifully restored, historic building. The walls are alive with many works of art and, circumstances and availability permitting, they are open to visitors taking a look at this magnificent downtown space.
1202 Contemporary offers impactful rotating exhibitions that bring regional and international perspectives to Gilroy. Housed in the Clove Art Complex in downtown Gilroy, this dynamic nonprofit gallery is the only gallery in town that is open daily. A unique bonus to this gallery experience is the curated collection of gift items available in the shop, featuring many items made and sourced from local artisans. The gallery's mission is to be an inclusive, welcoming space for the community while focusing on promoting marginalized artists. We strive to amplify the silenced voices in the art-world, including womxn, and BIPOC artists, artists with young families, and artists who deal in alternative mediums, and subject-matter. "1202 Contemporary's location within a community hub like The Clove Art Complex brings contemporary art into an accessible space, where anyone who drops in for a tea or meal can see our unique and diverse exhibitions.”
Just a few steps down the block, 6th Street Studios & Art Center serves as a hub for creatives of all ages. Since its inception in 2019, the center has offered workshops, youth art camps, and community programs that make art accessible to everyone. Events like Sip n’ Create and collaborative mentorships encourage creativity and connection among artists and art enthusiasts alike.

Moya Art Gallery & Studio showcases the vibrant, culturally-themed paintings of internationally recognized artist Ignacio "Nacho" Moya. The downtown gallery features bold portraits and locally-inspired pieces while serving as an event space for popular paint parties and private events. Nacho's engaging teaching style and inspiring artwork have drawn art enthusiasts from throughout the Bay Area and Central Valley to visit his Gilroy gallery. Open by appointment, the gallery invites visitors to experience Nacho's inspiring work.

The Gilroy Center for the Arts hosts a variety of programs, such as multi-cultural events, Art Classes for adults and children, Dances with live music, Art Exhibits for various artists, Artist Receptions, Open Mic Nights, and many more Events. The Center serves as a gathering place where community members can both experience and participate in the arts. Their rotating exhibitions and diverse programming ensure there's always something new to discover, making it an essential stop for anyone wanting to engage with Gilroy's creative spirit.

La Casa de Cultura y Arte represents a new chapter in Gilroy's arts scene. This newly transformed historic downtown house has become a vibrant hub where arts, culture, and wellness converge under one roof. As Ruben Dario Villa describes it, "La Casa serves as Gilroy's new home for arts, culture, and wellness - a space where creativity and community meet." The venue celebrates local performing artists, offers workshops and wellness programs, and builds bridges across generations and cultures. It embodies the spirit of Gilroy: grassroots, collaborative, and rooted in both tradition and innovation.

Other spaces to include on your art itinerary are:
-
Leedo Art & Framing, a long-standing local gallery that often hosts “Arts & Coffee” gatherings.
-
CMAP TV, Community Media Access Partnership, featuring rotating art exhibitions spotlighting local and regional visual artists, with receptions that double as networking nights for the creative community.
Together, these venues illustrate that Gilroy is more than a pass-through town; it’s a place where creatives thrive and visitors can feel part of that energy.
Another facet of the Gilroy art scene is performance art, particularly the art of traditional Mexican folk dance, in which M.A.N.O.S. Folklorico plays an integral part. This local Ballet Folklorico school embodies the spirit of cultural celebration through movement, color, and community pride. Their performances are a familiar presence throughout Gilroy's arts calendar - from the energetic Gilroy Chalk Festival in fall to the excitement of the Gilroy Rodeo in summer, and as featured performers at the monthly Third Friday Art Walks in downtown Gilroy. With their swirling skirts, intricate footwork, and joyful presence, M.A.N.O.S. Folklorico preserves tradition while making Gilroy brighter and more culturally rich with every performance.

Local Artists Making Waves
The voices of individual artists help define Gilroy’s evolving culture.
Ignacio "Nacho" Moya, founder of Moya Art Gallery & Studio, is known for his award-winning paintings celebrating culture, immigrant stories, and social justice. His vibrant portraits and community-focused exhibits have earned international recognition. Though Nacho travels extensively in his art career, he says he's always proud to represent Gilroy, believing that "art brings more beauty, color, personality, flavor and character to any city." For Nacho, art is also a source of unity that brings people together through cultural expression and inspires others to create. His message to emerging artists is simple yet powerful: "Show people who you are, express yourself, help people understand you through art."
Rubén "Mr. Fúchila" Darío Villa is a Gilroy-based multidisciplinary artist whose work centers on Chicano identity, culture, and what he calls "Chicanostalgia" - the collective nostalgia of growing up Latinx in the Bay Area. Known for his use of unconventional materials such as Flaming Hot Cheetos and Chiclets, he melds culture and artistic expression with compelling and thought-provoking art, most notably in his viral portrait Frida 4587, crafted from 4,587 pieces of candy-covered Chiclet gum. Through his art, public service, and commitment to amplifying Latinx voices, Villa has become a driving force in Gilroy's cultural renaissance.
Another local creative, Santiago Moreno, blends mural work, performance, and mentorship to help young artists explore themes of ancestry and belonging. Through collaborations with 6th Street Studios and CMAP TV, he’s helping connect art, education, and storytelling.
As for Kelly Michele Pfeffer, a fine artist and arts advocate, she sees Gilroy’s current moment as part of a larger cultural revival. “Gilroy has entered a renaissance period with such a rich and growing arts community,” she says. “From vibrant downtown murals to youth mentorships and gallery collectives, our art scene isn’t just alive — it’s evolving with a bold and inclusive voice.”

The festival brings together 195 artists, wellness vendors, and community organizations, attracting 16,000 attendees in a single day. As Ruben Dario Villa notes, the festival has made a “significant impact” in South County’s local economy and arts & culture scene, and has generated an economic impact of $702,000, with $76,000 paid directly to South County creatives. It's a powerful example of how cultural celebration fuels both community connection and creative economic vitality.
-
Gilroy Chalk Festival: Street artists transform public sidewalks into artistic canvases. Artists of all skill levels are welcome to participate and create art inspired by yearly themes. This family-friendly festival, annually organized by M.A.N.O.S. Gilroy, CA, features Folklórico dancers, live performances, kids zone, and local vendors.
These events amplify community expression, encourage visitor participation, and solidify Gilroy’s standing as a cultural tourism destination.
The Community Behind the Canvas
Art in Gilroy is not just about aesthetics — it’s supported by a robust network of community organizations. Groups such as SVCREATES, the Gilroy Arts Initiative, and the Gilroy Arts Roundtable provide mentorship, funding, and capacity building for creatives across the spectrum. When reflecting on the efforts from the community in making amazing events like La Ofrenda Festival & Wellness Fair possible, Ruben Dario says “The collaborative spirit also carries into the Gilroy Arts Roundtable, which continues to strengthen our local arts ecosystem by connecting artists, organizations and community partners.”
Initiatives like Elevate the Arts are particularly meaningful because they elevate underrepresented voices, ensuring the art scene reflects Gilroy’s diversity and collective vision. As Pfeffer puts it, “This small city offers a surprisingly dynamic and inclusive artistic pulse.”
